Ok, so I've just recently got a new (free) computer!
Problem is, it's busted.
So the computer turns on and all, at first a black screen with all the information in white, you know, where it goes "blah blah blah.... Press <F1> for setup , <F2> to continue.."
Anyway, it says
"Primary Master Hard Disk Drive S.M.A.R.T. Status bad.
WARNING: Immediate back-up your data and replace hard disk drive."
From my understanding, I just need to get a new hard drive for this thing, right?
My only concern is I don't wanna throw in a new hard drive just to find out it's something.
Any suggestions?
http://www.articlesbase.com/data-recover...95156.html Wrote:...Most modern drive comes with a sophisticated technology, known as SMART (Self Monitoring, Analysis and Reporting Technology). This is a pre-crash warning system, which monitors your hard drive internally on the basis of predefined parameters and creates reports and warning, if it finds any fault. Such parameters are sometimes referred as the hard drive reliability factors, like temperature, bad sectors etc. If you hard drive is predictable to fail, SMART might give you the following error message:
“Primary master hard disk: S.M.A.R.T. Status Bad, backup and replace”
Technical side of things
By the master hard disk, the error message refers to the one that is being used primarily by your computer to store data. Above error message suggests to immediately create backup of your critical data and replace the failed drive with new one. The drive might damage due to internal component failure, firmware corruption or electronic faults...
Yes, I would get a new HD.
Alright,, thanks, I'll do that, let u know later how its doin
You could also try disabling the S.M.A.R.T feature in the BIOS. See if that makes a difference.
I would still get a new drive and transfer your data.
If you get drive errors outside the scope of an OS, try replacing the 80 pin connector, or power supply. Above that, the drive PCB board is possibly damaged, or something mechanical (read/write heads, swing arm).
Since this was a free computer, I wouldn't even mess with it. Replace the hard drive & if the problem doesn't continue you know it was corrected.
Yeah I threw in my hard drive from my old computer.
It works fine, I'm gonna be using this new computer, the CPU is about the same, my V-Card, RAM sticks, and everything else fit into it, plus this one has slots for SD and other memory cards. Plus the actual tower looks a lot cooler

Anyways, problem solved, thanks for the help people.
Glad you got it resolved.

I think your hard disk had bad sectors you can resolve it easily. But I am glad that now you get resolved it.
