Ok so I restarted my computer, left the room & I come back to a blue screen: Driver_Power_State_Failure. After rebooting (which I had no trouble doing) I have windows debugging tools analyze the memory dump. It comes up with the probable cause the driver ntkrpamp.exe which I've never heard of. The mini dump says the same thing. Doing a google on the error an MS doc as well as other sites state the cause as a firewire device connected to the computer during boot up. The problem is that I don't have firewire. Solution is to install latest service pack. Other places say that a driver is messing up during a resume from sleep which also doesn't apply to me. Huh

So does anyone have a clue (or even half a clue) because I don't???!!!! System information here. OS Vista SP 2.

Most recent software changes are photoshop & gimp. I did have a bunch of updates 2 days ago. No recent hardware changes.
Does anyone have anything?Huh
So you were using the computer, hit restart, left the room while it was restarting, then returned to the error message?
yep basically.
I've had a few driver BOSDs in the past few months so maybe its time to reinstall.
Have you tried checking to see if your drivers need updating then?
no. recently installed latest graphics but didn't like the menu change so I reverted.

That in itself could be the problem...

Or switch to a more stable Operating System. Such as one that allows for specific hardware software (drivers) to be loaded into the kernel modularly, so that to keep the kernel & the software are truly independent of one another, thus allowing you to load & unload modular drivers on the fly without the requirement of rebooting.

Just saying...
Well I don't really like Linux.

No I had a few random blue screens before this. I've been told that its the sporadic problems that are the hardest to diagnose. I haven't had this happen since.Huh
Have you had any more of these problems?
Nope. I've considered that it is time for me to do a reinstall but perhaps not. Its just barely been a year since installation though.
