Even though (I think) some of the regulars here are a bit younger than I, I'm wondering if any of us have been on BBS systems before? I just edged that technology, as 2 friends on separate occasions tried to show me BBS boards, but they were either down, long distance, or pay per usage. It was the end of the era, '95 by the time I got into computers so like I said, I just edged it.

After watching this documentary on BBSes, I am really getting interested in the technology. I even found one in my local town! After much research I think I'm gonna set one up.

So really, this is just an open-topic as to the subject of BBS usage in general. Share some stories, ask some questions... lets get this topic going Smile

I'm excited! Exclamation
I actually hadn't heard of BBSes until this thread. I looked at the Wikipedia article on them and they look like an interesting hobby.
That looks quite quaint.Big Grin
You are welcome to join, even though it's still under heavy construction.

Use telnet (Windows XP & lower has it installed by default), or any other terminal emulator & connect to bbs.akroncdnr.com on port 23.
how would I do that?
That?

Start->run-> telnet bbs.akroncdnr.com 23
Btw, I see the admin RWenger signed up Smile

I'm thinking about making a doom wad resource. I'm still not really sure of the direction I want to take this thing.
Not working.
Not installed on Vista.
Sorry, I tried to make that known...

Ah thanks for that PM no2. It works, although I don't really know how to work IT. Tongue
Yeh I know. Windows is trying to install it but it isn't. No it installed it. Can't register though. Maybe later.

There isn't much to do until I get the door games working... & stuff added. Right now, it's kind of like having a web site, with hello world on it.

I changed your password, because I didn't know if you used that password for anything else. I don't even want to know! The less I know, the less I get accused of Tongue
What, does that software let you see passwords?
Looks like it, yeah. You want me to change it again?
No, it's good as it is. Smile Unless you want something more secure, then you can change it to whatever you want and PM me what you changed it to.
I have a new, much much less klunky BBS setup.

A few months ago I decided to trash the Linux BBS for a Windows one. I setup Windows Server 2000, installed synchronet & it's a much smoother setup!

As well I tried to move over any accounts that were previously setup! I welcome you all to check this out once again. It's my hopes to eventually ad dialup service to the server, thus making it work just like the BBSes of the 90's Smile

There are currently a few door games installed, but the only one that is currently working is BBS Hacker. In what little free time that I have I will continue to work on this.

Thanks Smile

Added more door games, L.O.R.D., TradeWars 2002, PimpWars, & still have BBS Hacker running.

Also created custom menus Smile

Using sockets in HTML 5, you can bind to the telnet port : JSTerm has been started, but my understanding is still under development.
