A few years ago, my gf's sister asked me how to disable the network card timeout (in the power settings) on her laptop so she could download torrents overnight. I refused to assist her because a. The torrents she was downloading were illegal & b. because laptops were not meant to be ran 24x7. She was slightly unhappy but time went on. Well now my gf finds her self in the same dilemma. For the last few months she's left her laptop on nonstop, & now the monitor turned a fuzzy red. To anyone with laptop repair experience, this is evidence that the ccfl bulb is starting to go. So I suggest that she start powering the thing off at night. She refused. Today, in a panic, she brings the laptop over, it starts up completely red with the compaq bios logo, & when Windows starts the entire LCD is flickering on & off until the entire display dies. So Monday, when I go into my shop, I get to replace her LCD ccfl.
When I use my laptop, I use it for the extended length of time that I need to get my work done, & then I promptly power it off.
For those here with Laptops, what kind of usage (or punishment) do you dish out onto your laptop? What about your friends or family? Have any of them ever pushed the laptop to it's limits like the above?
I am using my laptop for 8 hours daily too. I dont know whether its gonna create problem for me or not.
You need to, add a monitor.. Sorry bud on that one.. I knew someone, his burnt out.. Big dots showed on the screen.. So now he has a monitor to go with it...

No worries. I've already replaced the ccfl.
the thing with laptops is that they have lousy cooling systems. even the hard drives are usually installed with little or no ventilation, and lots of heat can gather up if its running 24/7.
if you put the laptop on one of those laptop coolers with fan(s), then it wont matter how many hours you run it. and all that has to be done is that you set the screen to turn off after like 10mins of not being used, that will save the screen from dying again.
Well I turn my laptop on when i wake up and it stays on until I go to bed, so that's a good 12-13 hours a day and it's still as smooth as a nut. As "Shovenose" stated alot of laptops have really bad cooling but this is different from manufacturer to manufacturer, just go easy and if it is necessary get a cooling fan to aid the laptop.

I haven't heard that phrase before. Is that phrase common in England?
My Toshiba tablet doesn't get very hot unless I run intensive engineering applications or unless my webcam is turned on with contrast enhance (it's almost never on). When I notice it running hot, I try to cut everything necessary off. But heat isn't exactly the topic's focus.
My laptop is set to turn off my screen after 1 minute of inactivity. Therefore, if I step away from my computer for a minute, the screen takes a break (and so do my eyes).
LMAO, wouldn't say England but where I live (IOM) it gets used a bit and my laptop is set to turn off the screen after 5 minutes.
Yeah no problem, and yeah IOM is Isle Of Man. I was originally born in Ireland then moved to IOM, never been to England lol
I had actually never heard of Isle Of Man before.
Yeah it's very small, about 33 miles long and 15 miles wide
I've never heard of it either.
Lol, I'm not suprised. Why don't you google map it
I actually Wikipedia'ed it. I always find it interested to find out more about a place (or learn about a new place).
Anyways, we're wildly off-topic.
Yes lol, back on subject. If you wanna use you're laptop alot I would definetly recommend an extra cooling fan.
I should probably get one for mine. I use it for hours at a time.

Same here, sometimes my latop get's so hot I have to put it on a pillow lol
Oh so are you actually using yours on your lap?
I don't know if this is true but I've heard of male related problems developing with some because of that.
