Hey everyone, just put a new graphics card in my computer! A NVIDIA Geforce GSX 250 with 1 gig GDDR3 memory. Had a quick question though... On the specifications for the card it says a minimum power supply of 475 watts. The new power supply which I recently purchased for my computer is 450 watts, but I'm only running one SATA drive, and DVD player separate on the system. The power supply is built to run numerous components which the connections are not in use. Thinking 450watts should be good to power the graphics card correctly?
Everything seems to be running great so far! Now I need a better computer game to test out the new system. The two best games I have are FEAR, and Ghost Recon - Advanced Warfighter. Both of them set on maximum settings, and resolution on my 19" Sony LCD monitor 1280x1024. No lag, and the graphics look amazing. Thinking Crysis is the best game out for computers right now? I'm sure this system could handle that game with any problems.
System:
Antec Case
BFG 450watt PSU
ASUS 939 Motherboard
2.2GHZ AMD 3200+ CPU
2GIG DDR1 400mhz RAM
1GIG GDDR3 GEFORCE BFG 250
320GB SATA 7200RPM HD
DVD/CD Drive
Windows XP Home: SP3
If the video card requires 475, I'd be sure to meet that requirement. The job of the power supply is to take an unknown amount of power from the wall & guarantee that the 5.5's & the 3.3's volts are 5.5 & 3.3
You get a slight draw on the power from something else on the line, electric noise, or anything else, & you could be looking at data loss, data storage corruption, or possibly blue screens. If the values get all wonky (are not as designed) then the transistors start storing the wrong values & your OS chokes, pukes, & reboots.
You always need to make sure you have over the recomended just in case, but in saying that it will only be 475 for a specific PC spec. Like my card has a minimum of 630W but thats with a core i7 computer. My card under full load draws 180W so yours will draw alot less so you should be fine and I wouldn't worry but the next time you upgrade I would definetly get a better PSU.
As for crysis, I have to say your computer will only play Crysis on minimum with no AA or AF with about 20FPS
Thanks guy's, all this stuff is good to know , Ive been wanting to upgrade my video card.
Installed Crysis tonight. The graphics are very good, but I get lag on max settings during combat. I mainly bought the game to test out this new graphics card, but so far I'm not very impressed. To run lag free I have to turn down graphics to the point where it doesn't look that great. Strange considering I can run fear maxed with perfect graphics, and it looks amazing with no lag at all. I would assume the bottleneck in my setup right now is the CPU being only 2.2GHZ?
I agree with no2pencil. I believe that if you want your computer to last & be sufficient your hardware needs to exceed & not barely meet the requirments. Once you start to add other devices your demand will increase so why not make sure that it is sufficient now???!!! You do want your computer to be able to perform as it needs to & today's games are resource intensive. I don't know what they base the requirments on but if 475 watts is strictly for the card & not for the entire system, then you do need another PSU. Regardless if your new card has a 6 or 8 pin power port on it & your PSU doesn't have a corresponding power cable then your card isn't getting the power that it needs. Those 4-pin molex to 6 pin pci-e adapters don't provide a sufficient supply of power and that will affect your card's performance.
Welcome to the forum townsbg
Well I did say Crysis was very labour intensive and you need a high end card to play it (Read my review), but your 2.2Ghz (Is it dual core?) may be the recomended but you really need a Quad Core Q6600 to play it smooth and an exellent card as for 4-pin to 6-pin connectors not providing enough power well I totally disagree with that. I am using 2 4 to 6-pin connectors and my card is hitting the benchmarks it should be.
Well I guess we can't agree on everything but can we agree that 475 watts probably isn't enough?
I have an 8000 watt generator you can use if you find you self in a pinch. lol
I think that he would want to be able to use it afterwords.

The PSU is brand new, and it is now out of the 30 day return policy. Cost about $75 dollars, so I want to stick with it for now. I'm sure it's capable of supplying the power required for the graphics card. In the future I'll be going with a higher wattage PSU. Around the 800watt range.
The 2.2ghz AMD in my computer isn't dual core. It's a single core 939 socket CPU. From what I remember the fastest 939 CPU is a 3.2GHZ single core. Shouldn't be too expensive now...

Ok the fact that its a single core and the minimum to play crysis is a Pentium 4 @ 4.00Ghz your seriously lacking and thats only the stated minimum, I would recoment a minimum of a 1.5Ghz Dual
Thats all you need for Crysis? I suppose the bigger demand is on the GPU.

There is a huge damage on the GPU, but the card I just installed is capable of some serious graphics processing. There is a lot of physics, and such involved with this game that requires a lot of central processing power. I'm sure one of the physic cards would lessen the load on the CPU a lot...

He more then likely meant demand but damage works also
Yes, I meant to type "demand"...
