Here's a head scratcher: So I wanted to watch a DVD yesterday in my computer & it never would play it. By the time I was done troubleshooting for the night I had tried multiple DVDs on both Vista and 7 with no joy. Sad Tonight I tried again on Vista and XP (all 3 on the same system in the same drive). To summarize I've tried multiple DVDs (video and data) & a CD from Vista, 7, & XP on the same computer in the same drive and still nothing. The drive is shown as empty each time. At least one one of the DVDs works in my work laptop. In addition the last few times I've tried I've noticed that the disk doesn't appear to have moved because the label is still in the same spot. The drive light does light up and flash for 10-15 seconds before it stops so I know that it's trying. I've checked the connections & they are good. I don't have another DVD drive to check nor do I have another computer to check this drive in.

I'm fairly certain that the drive is bad but I wanted a public opinion before I replace it.Undecided
When my drive spins up, I can usually feel it spinning if I put my hand on the side of the computer case. Can you feel your drive spinning?
No I didn't feel anything.
I would double check POST & make sure the drive shows up. This will assure jumper settings & cable connections.
The drive shows up in windows but I'll check.
It showed up in the BIOS.
Does the drive eject? Does sound like you are correct in assuming that it's dead.
It does eject. When I have my ear up to it I can hear it trying.

Thats what I was afraid of. Sad[Image: smack.gif] It gave me 4 1/2 years.[Image: blink.gif]
I ordered a new one off of new egg. Dirt cheap because it is an OEM.Smile
The new drive is one the way. Should have it Monday or Tuesday. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.as...6827136168
Looks like a good deal to me.
I hope so. Surely it will last long enough for this system to die.Big Grin
I got the drive in today.Big GrinTongue
Nice, is it working well?
Barely tested it.
Give it hell...
I watched a TV show from a dvd on it. Thats pretty much the extent of the time that I've been able to test it.
If the power plug or socket of the fine and other devices are from the same connection, and then surge protector or power cord may be the culprit. Built-in DVD drive to get their power from the connector. If the connector is also very good, then the problem lies in the DVD, instead of power.
Thanks for that but I've long since replaced the drive and the replacement works so I know that there was a problem with the old one.
