Awesome Joe! Glad that worked out for you!

I'm really glad that I posted this. It seems to be helping a lot of other technicians & preventing complete reinstalls.
Thanks for Posting, saved me.
the client was pleased as well.
Only thing I did different was I just renamed Ipsec.sys to Ipsec.old and rebooted.
Came right up and connected to the network.

Thanks no2pencil!
I've had seen this exact problem two times in a month so far, had to go with a format/win installation on the first computer due to client's urgent need for the computer. I had couple of days to work on the 2nd computer, did some research and got to this post.
First computer had the Free edition of AVG and the 2nd one Avast. Both with Win XP, infected by virus, did the cleanup, virus free now but no sign of Internet connection.
Based on this wonderful thread, I tried renaming the ipsec.sys and rebooting, it created a new one but still didn't help.
Checked the Registry, the whole ipsec path was missing from CurrentControlSet, found one in CurrentControlSet01, exported, modified it to the correct path, imported, rebooted, all working fine now!
Thanks very much, this saved a lot of time for me and money for my client! Smile
I can hardly believe how many people that this is helping. My goal was to just help out one other person. This is absolutely fantastic!
Well perhaps it's more common than you think.
TY #2pencile that post was beyond helpful if you dont mind i have a few more questions for you about this subject.
Feel free to post any questions that you have.
Thanks no2pencil, a great solution! after 2 hours of work, I found your post and this solved the problem... until something else appeared

Unfortunately now I’m stuck in a “acquiring network address” which will not end.
ipconfig /renew says “the RPC server is unavailable”
any ideas?
my situation is identical. - Xp3 infected with malware, cleaned with avast, but with some consequences it seems.

update 2
seems i have a lot of services, for example DHCP Client, not started and broken.
I'll run sfc /scannow, and hopefully this will fix it.
Likely the sfc will not correct the DHCP/RPC service. Look under the Dependencies list for any service that will not start. Make certain each of those dependencies are either started (if they are services) or exist (if they are files).
I did a "update" (repair) install of XP and thankfully apparently it fixed all the problems.

thanks for the advices! there were a lot of services & files missing or corrupted.
no2pencil you are the mannn!!! I have never signed up to a forum in my life and I said if this works, I will have to let you know how much this help is appreciated. Thank you for taking the time to post it and I know it must have taken some serious dedication to get this problem sorted. You did extremely well on this one and I did not just want to take the info and run, I wanted to say thanks ALOT!! Smile
Fathomp: that means a lot to me. Thank you for taking the time to post here.
