I recently got an iphone & I was disappointed to find out that apple would only allow you to put a custom ring tone on an iphone for 99 cents. Since I had already bought the song through itunes I really didn't want to do that so today I googled for how to create an iphone ring tone for free and I came of up with this: How to Make Custom iPhone Ring tones for Free. Apparently all itunes does is crop down the song to what selection you tell it to and save the file under an extension that itunes recognizes as a ring tone and then allows you to put the file on the phone as a ring tone. That article shows you how to do it manually for free. This worked for me. There is no extra software to download because you do most of the steps within itunes. The only thing you have to do outside of itunes is to change the extension.

So that did work? Good! They shouldn't charge you to use the song for a different purpose if you've already purchased it.
