I'm doing a full malware scan of my computer tonight and just a few minutes ago I noticed that the c drive is gone.Huh It shows up in computer managment though. From windows explorer if I type in c:\ it is not found. The malware programs that I'm running (superantispyware & avira) are running fine. Some programs work but some don't. Firefox & IE both work (both from quick launch). What few programs I've tried to run from the start menu don't run including FF & IE. The shortcuts (in the start menu) also aren't right clickable. I can "move around" from the command line just fine and I was able to run speedfan from it (which is what I was wanting to run). I'm not getting any other errors & I haven't gotten any lately or had any blue screens, etc. I need to go to bed so I don't have any time to investigate.

Have these programs been known to lock out the c drive? It wasn't doing this before I started the scan. I'm hoping that the problem goes away after a reboot which I'm not doing now because of the scans. Any ideas? I'll be really concerned if it is doing it after a reboot.
What happens if instead of C:\ you type in %systemroot%
Cannot find c:\windows.
If you right click "My Computer", select manage -> disk management, what do you see for the drive selections?
It shows that the system partition has the drive letter c.
What shows up under the registry for mounted drives?

HKeyLocalMachine -> SYSTEM -> Mounted Devices
I figured it out. It was something I did.Blush
What did you do?
Ok I have my system partition also mounted into a folder in addition to the drive letter & I removed the folder mount before the scan (as I usually do). After the scan I remounted the partition & the drive letter was back.
you usually do it every time SO , did this happen first time to you ?
any ways thanks you for the tip to mount a drive into a folder before scanning Big Grin
Check for the drives in registry... [regedit \ HKLM \ SYSTEM \ Mounted Devices] do you see your drives there? I am simply curious to see exactly what this 'virus' did.
For one, who said anything about a virus? Two, I said that I fixed it. Three, this is an old resolved thread.
