Hey your welcome brother, glad you were able to make use of it.
I split this topic from SolidSpartan's 'Rate the PC' thread.

How old is that computer? What OS do you have on it?

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't think that theres any reason for an OS not to install unless its not genuine or you didn't use the proper key code. even pirate copies of soft ware will install, you just wont have any access to their updates cause it wont validate.
If the OS was 32 bit, there is a limit to how much of the hard drive that it can address. Though, that should be handled by the file system & not the OS, but I do remember it being an issue with Windows 98 & drives larger than 32gb had to be jumpered down. Chances are XP wouldn't work with proprietary hardware that was onboard, such as the sound card, ethernet, ect.

& FYI, if you don't include a correct validation key, Windows XP will operate for 30 days. At that point you will only be able to log in with the validation key.
Actually the maximum amount of hard drive space your partitions can be doesn't have anything to do with 32 or 64 bits (thats just memory addressing) but it has to do with the file system and its addressing. NTFS has a much higher limit than FAT32. From what I'm reading it does seem that 2k & Xp can have a higher volume limit than 95/98 (on fat32) but no where here the theoretical limit. You should look it up on wikipedia.

I knew there was some reason I didn't use that bootleg any more, couldn't remember what it was. Thanks for reminding Me.
Using a 320GB hard-drive on my computer with Windows XP Home. Total capacity listed for the 320GB drive is 298GB. NTSF file system.
Xp should be able to use a 320 gb hard drive. I have mine using a 750. It is normal that not all of the hard drive room is used. That is because how manufacturers define a gig & how the operating systems define a gig are different.
meh, i dont really know why i was just reciting the reason he gave us as to why he didnt install it on the computer.
i dont mind vista that much. though it did seem to be using a lot of ram. it said i only had like 33% ram spare.

That's because the base requirement for Vista is 2GB! It's a resource hog!
Did you disable Aero? That would help you a lot.
Yeh a lot. For me it was all of 33 mb.Undecided The best thing to do is to turn off 3rd party services & other applications that like to run all of the time and turn of the unneeded windows services.Idea However you have to be careful there. An example of an unneeded windows service is print spooler; you don't need that unless you use a printer.Rolleyes
33MB for disabling Aero? I disabled it on a similar laptop before and it was a huge boost to its performance.
So how much ram did it save? How did you turn it off? I set performance options for best performance & it looked just like 2k with the exception of the start menu. Maybe if you gained more ram than that it could be that the laptop uses shared memory. That would make sense to me. Huh
I don't know. I was doing it for a teacher at school one day.
