Any one with experience editing there registry ? I could use some tips on what to and not to do when it comes to deleting and adding entries.
First, I assume you know how to use the Windows Registry Editor, which can be accessed by choosing run from the start menu (or by pressing Windows key + R) and typing 'regedit'. Before using that tool though, make sure to back up your registry in case you tweak the wrong thing.

What in your registry would you need to modify?
yes I know all that, I would just like to go over some of the entries with some one more knowable be for I start trail and error.
I know you were talking about Windows Movie Maker, but what in particular was your problem with it?
Ill post the info on it tomorrow ,I just drove 200 miles and its past my bed time.
Alright. Any time you're ready. Smile

This just goes to show you how tired I was last night . all that stuff is on my computer down in the country.

Movie maker keeps freezing up because of a stupid codec. its either not working properly or theres multiple instances of the same one. I don't know I'll have to wait till I get back down to the other house to figure it out.

Rename & save before you delete a key. This way if you need to retrieve the data that was in it, it isn't completely gone.
I had the same problem, I ended up having to re-install WMM

I tried that , it didn't take care of the problem, but I'm glad it worked for you.
I would say the best thing is just get a third party version?

Yes , Ive been looking at some alternatives to movie maker. But I still think I can fix this. It just takes time and that is a sparse commodity for me any more.
When will you be able to give us some more details on your problem?

I'm going home this evening when the traffic dies down some, probably around 6:00 or 6:30. witch means I'll be going past your town around 8:00 or 8:30 closer to 9:00 , I have three days off so I should get something done this weekend.
Here's whats going on.

This is the error message

This is the error report

This is the search for mpegsplitter.ax

These are the steps tried

This was the attempt to unregister mpegsplitter.ax

And this is the thing sitting in my registry

I was un able to find any updates for mpegspliter.ax on line

So here are my questions

Why didn't my search of my drives find it and why did I have to do a separate search in the registry to turn it up.

why was I not able to unregister it as suggested.

It has been suggested to rename mpegslitter.ax ( do I rename one or both).

What is the significance of the " " around one of the entries

If I delete the thing how do I put it back if need be? I'm unable to copy anything in registry to clip board.

Concerns
I don't know if this thing is used by other programs or not and I don't want to cause something not to work That I paid for.

and seeing how a couple of things havent worked already Im not sure I trust a back up.

Ive never modified a registry and I am concerned about screwing up.
In Windows Media Player, go to Tools > Options, then click the "Compatibility tab. In the box with the filters, does it list a MPEG Splitter? If so, try disabling it.

You meant Movie Maker , Yes I'll try that Thanks.
That seems to have worked, I cant beleive it was that easy. Thanks Rob

I just though that I would add, for the record, that you should not mess with the registry unless you know with out a shadow of a doubt what you are doing and have a backup plan in case in case you screw something up. It could render windows useless.
