They are incredibly harmful! The malicious software has either embedded itself as part of the os, or it has replaced a function of the os with itself. The best way to remove them is with a program that can run the os from multiple modes, such as combofix. But be warned, unerstand what you are doing. Not every root kit is easily removed with a single program, & combofix carries the potential of doing as much damage as good. Don't just willy-nilly double click & run stuff. Read & understand or you'll be fixing more than just a root kit.

How do you know you have been affected by a rootkit? Do you know which rootkit it is and what OS are you running?

Generally you will notice typical virus behavior. You'll know it's a root kit when your anti virus notifies you that you are infected with a root kit, & it will generally be by name. This is the name identified by the virus signature database of your anti virus software. & despite multiple attempts of removal, your anti virus is unable to do so.

I was just trying to figure out what rootkit he has contracted... If he got infected with the stealth rootkit that was recently released his personal information is likely to have been compromised.

It's been almost a month since that member last posted here. Unless they are going to push the issue, I wouldn't worry about it.
