Not Solved The extension "Yahoo! Axis" was automatically removed - Chrome
I get this notification in Chrome very frequently.

Quote:Confirm Changes: The extension "Yahoo! Axis" was automatically removed

It pops up at least once every time the browser starts, and it also pops up seemingly at random after the browser has been opened. I have never used an extension called "Yahoo! Axis" and if I go into the list of extensions, I do not see the extension.

Does anyone know what causes this?

Not Solved RE: The extension "Yahoo! Axis" was automatically removed
I did some digging. I found an entry in Chrome's preferences file (in %localappdata%\Google\Chrome\User Data\Default) that referenced the above extension, but the extension didn't exist in the extensions folder.

When I removed the entry, it returned immediately. I figured this was because there were files Chrome was detecting with the assumption that the file was a live plugin, thus restoring the default preferences. I had more digging to do.

I found one other reference with the extension name by searching the extension's character string "cgnkbnaiipmfbakpmhllalggoepniemh" in the default folder. It returned one file, "chrome-extension_cgnkbnaiipmfbakpmhllalggoepniemh_0.localstorage" in the Local Storage folder (under the "Default" folder). I deleted that file. I then deleted the entry in the properties file. The entry came back again. It looks like this:

Not Solved RE: The extension "Yahoo! Axis" was automatically removed
I tried again, making sure to actually close Chrome before removing the affected section from the preferences file this time. So far, so good. I'll update this thread later, as the problem was intermittent and it will be a while before I can tell the problem is actually solved.

Surely there is some kind of reset option if that doesn't work. If nothing else an uninstall, cleanup, and reinstall. I don't use chrome so I can't really help.

I would rather figure out why it happened, if at all possible. I also wonder if reinstalling would really help since my settings for Chrome are synchronized to my account.

I'm not familiar at all with this issue, but I would suggest also searching for that string in the Windows registry.

Also, a dirty trick you can pull if it continues to come back as the same name, is to make an empty file with notepad, then rename it to that file. Set the permissions to read only.

I checked the registry in Chrome's plugin directory while diagnosing the issue, and it was not there.

I think it's fixed. Smile The entry in the preferences file hasn't returned.

Not Solved RE: The extension "Yahoo! Axis" was automatically removed - Chrome
You can see what I did above. But to summarize...

How I stopped the notification:

  1. Exit Chrome. Make sure no Chrome processes are running in the task manager.
  2. Remove the specified extension entry (shown above in post #2) from the preferences file at %localappdata%\Google\Chrome\User Data\Default
  3. Remove the "chrome-extension_cgnkbnaiipmfbakpmhllalggoepniemh_0.localstorage" file in the Local Storage folder (under the "Default" folder). (This step is probably unnecessary, but it's a more thorough removal)
