The other day I got a rather interesting phone call. This woman calls into my repair shop & immediately informs me that she has no ability to pay me for my time other than to post some hand written fliers in her apartment building, but she's in a really difficult situation & potentially dangers situation. So I agree to listen & help her out the best I can with any free advice.

Her situation is that she feels she's being stalked online. This conclusion was reached by a couple of trial & error items on her end. What she would do is spend a day or two doing nothing but doing Google searches for specific items, & these were things she would normally not look for. We'll use a vacation to Tokyo Japan for example. The next day someone in real life would mention "So, looking to go to Tokyo huh?". That's all the more personal detail she gave me, & really all the more that I needed to know. So here is really what the question boils down to :

1.) Say someone installed a keylogger onto her computer, is there anything to defeat it?

My suggestions to her :

Look at the back of the computer, & make sure that there is nothing plugged in between the keyboard & the computer. Next, during a long time frame that she isn't going to use the computer, open notepad, & place an object onto the keyboard in order to flood the buffer by typing a constant letter.

2.) Say someone installed a piece of RDP software onto her computer, is there a way to defeat it?

My suggestion to her :

Unplug her DSL modem (she is in fact using DSL, I verified this) on a weekend or a holiday. It's my knowledge that this is when ISP companies will cycle their DHCP addresses & she'll land a new IP address at the next boot of her DSL modem. With a new IP she maybe able to dodge any future login attempts, assuming that the software is requiring the outside intruder to access her system via IP address.

I also suggested that she call her ISP to look for any traffic to a non-ip based service such as noisp.com or other similar websites.

The obvious solution would be to get the system & look over the running processes, & also format her system with a fresh install of the Operating System (which I verified is Windows XP). However like I said, she's unable to do so at the current time.

Just curious what pieces of defensive software, firewall, or other anyone else might recommend, or suggest.

Here are the four major factors that we should note while hiring a Professional Website Design firm. These issues can be addressed only by a professional website design firm.
The professional website designers should have a clear-cut idea about the latest web standards and technologies and should also have adequate experience in them. They should know about all the dos and don’ts of web development.
Maria Van Buren, a court artist since the late 1980s has been fired from her post following a string of smudgy, indistinct paintings which ‘fail to accurately capture the atmosphere and events at Lincoln Crown Court’.

In a passionate outburst Ms Van Buren, 57, has defended her right to explore new creative avenues. ‘Nobody said anything when I started putting little Munch scream-heads into the jury box, or even the year when I decided to blur the accuseds’ faces in my fauvist-pointillist style.’

Johnathan Wilder, a spokesman for Her Majesty’s Court Service said: ‘It is with great regret that we have had to lose the services of Maria Van Buren, but it was becoming increasingly obvious that her shouts of ‘hold it! don’t move’ were interrupting the business of the court. We have concluded that, however delightful her work may be on its own merit, it fails to live up to the exacting standards required by the Crown Court. Plus it looks like a five-year-old has done it.’

The Ministry of Justice has issued a statement saying it is considering installing automatic daguerrotypes in courtrooms, prompting outrage from the community of courtroom artists who see this new technology as a threat to their way of life.

It is the second time that Van Buren has been sacked. She previously did the artist’s impression of wanted criminals for the Metropolitan Police, with the result that officers were often searching for a man in a bowler hat with an apple for a head. ‘Then she went through a Picasso phase, and all the suspects had three eyes and their heads were completely distorted,’ said a police spokesman. ‘If that wasn’t bad enough, she expected a couple of million for each of her works. I mean, the paintings were a load of rubbish and then she charges an arm and a leg. Or it might have been two legs and an eye, it was very hard to tell.’

The Predator, a member of an aggressive alien warrior race, will today meet with David Cameron in an attempt to overturn the ban on hunting human beings for sport.

The previous government ruled that although The Predator does tend to single out muscle-bound lunks and snivelling gun-touting nutjobs, the use of active camouflage, plasma weapons and retractable wrist blades, still makes the hunt unnecessarily cruel.

Pro-Predator enthusiasts say that the pursuit is necessary to control the numbers of testosterone-fuelled, steroid-pumped knuckleheads running around the woods with guns. The Predator claims the ban infringes its human rights and is a bitter blow to the rural economy.
Otis Ferry, son of Roxy Music singer Brian Ferry, is one of those opposing the ban. He argues, ‘Look, at least it’s quick and other than being skinned alive and having their spinal column torn from their body it’s not that barbaric. We’ve had alien hunters visiting our planet for over 2,000 years now and it would be a shame if that part of our heritage were sacrificed to political correctness.’

Anti-Predator protestor Daniel Clover disagrees, ‘The police, the National Trust and the Forestry Commission have struggled to enforce the ban. There seems to be a general reluctance to take on a huge unstoppable alien killing machine. Yet, in a recent survey 77% of people said that they would prefer not to be hunted and slaughtered, with their skull claimed as a prize that ends up mounted on a spaceship wall. Only 5% of those surveyed remain undecided.’
Prior to the election, Mr Cameron indicated that his party would be in favour of overturning the ban. His comments were quickly seized upon by opposition MPs.

‘This is another example of David Cameron championing the privileged,’ says Labour MP Austin Morris. ‘I can’t say I know a lot about The Predator, but I can’t imagine there are many working-class alien families able to send their kids away on a posh camping trip, laden with all the latest thermal-imaging gizmos.’

Ferry agrees that class has become a factor in the debate, ‘With it’s glowing green blood and vagina-shaped face, The Predator represents everything that is good about the aristocracy.’

Unable to query host name. ipconfig hates me.

Along my adventures of cleaning up virus infected machines, I often times run into an issue that makes the customer very very angry with me. The issue being that I said the turnaround time is usually next day. However, every once in a while I hit the wall. I run into some obscure configuration, some Windows component gets foobar'ed. Something goes horribly, horribly wrong.

I run the shop that assures you we don't format. We work it through. In a worst case scenario, I'll do a 'repair install' to replace the core components of Windows. But that comes with the cost of me sweating bullets hoping nothing goes wrong. So in this situation I decided to rough it through, ask the customer for some patience, & tackled the issue... into the unknown.

Operating System : Windows XP Professional service pack 3.

Service pack 3? Crud! All of my tools are for Service Pack 2! & from the looks of it, it was a fresh install of SP3, because I couldn't back it up with any of the methods provided by Microsoft. So lets get to the nitty gritty. The problem, the solution, the adventure.

Customer drops off her PC, it's having 'adult advertisement' issues. Kids have been downloading nasty films & free music from Lime Wire. So right away I'm thinking that her DNS has been hijacked.

I scanned the hard drive in our Linux virus cleaning box. Removed a couple of infected files. We'll say less than 20. Put the hard drive back into her system, boot, & the 1st thing I notice is that the desktop doesn't come up for quite some time. I can click on start, but CNTRL + ESC offers me nothing. I can start -> run -> cmd & get a command prompt, but typing config & hitting enter does nothing. Eventually it comes back to me & I can start looking at her network settings. The IP address is set to auto, but her DNS is set to 96 something. Most likely AT&T DNS servers. I go to install HijackThis from off our network, but the link doesn't work. So I throw ipconfig at the command prompt & I get slapped in the face. Unable to query host name. WTF is this?

So I issue the usual TCP/IP resets :

[il]netsh winsock reset catalog[/il]
[il]netsh ip reset reset.log[/il]

Nothing, no ip address. So I manually set the ip address. More slaps in teh face.

So doing some extensive research (& getting quite pissed off reading how the previous solutions worked for everyone else) I come accross this solution. Uninstall TCP/IP.

Start -> Control -> Network -> Right click on local network -> properites -> general (tab) -> scroll to TCP/IP -> uninstall.

WTF, uninstall is greyed out. ARG!

Seems that not such a brick wall. Check it out (at your own risk!)

start -> run -> notepad C:\windows\inf\nettcpip.inf

Look for the following :

;=======================
; TCP/IP Primary Install
;=======================

[MS_TCPIP.PrimaryInstall]
; TCPIP has properties to display
Characteristics = 0xA0 ; NCF_HAS_UI | NCF_NOT_USER_REMOVABLE
AddReg          = Registry.MS_TCPIP.PrimaryInstall, Registry.MS_TCPIP,

0xA0 is our target. Edit this to 0XE0, alt -> file -> save, & we now have ourselves an unsigned driver. Go back to the TCP/IP properties on the general tab, click install & lets install this modified inf file. Look'it there, uninstall is now available. So lets uninstall this borked up TCP/IP stack.

Start -> Control -> Network -> Right click on local network -> properites -> general (tab) -> scroll to TCP/IP -> uninstall.

A little regedit action to finish the job (that the above netsh commands couldn't handle)

Start -> run -> regedit
HKLM -> SYSTEM -> Current Control Set -> Services
In this list lets trash (or rename if you are not so daring ) winsock & winsock2

Then lets reverse the process.

Start -> run -> notepad C:\windows\inf\nettcpip.inf

Look for the following :

;=======================
; TCP/IP Primary Install
;=======================

[MS_TCPIP.PrimaryInstall]
; TCPIP has properties to display
Characteristics = 0xE0 ; NCF_HAS_UI | NCF_NOT_USER_REMOVABLE
AddReg          = Registry.MS_TCPIP.PrimaryInstall, Registry.MS_TCPIP,

Change 0xE0 back to 0xA0, alt -> file -> save

Start -> Control -> Network -> Right click on local network -> properites -> general (tab) -> install -> have disk -> C:\windows\inf\nettcpip.inf

reboot.

Crud, same damn thing. Oh well, at least I know I've a fresh install of TCP/IP

The solution wound up being a little bit of reading, seeing that IPSEC wasn't starting. IPSEC is a dependant of the Windows Firewall, which also wasn't starting. My guess is, most likely this was the target of the virus, inject the DNS, take out the firewall, & the client is powerless to do anything but view forced ads.

The service for IPSEC complained that a file was missing. Nice, 'A' file. Ah well, lets check the registry :

Start -> run -> regedit
HKLM -> SYSTEM -> Current Control Set -> Services -> IPSEC -> ImagePath

This shows us : system32\DRIVERS\ipsec.sys

Guess what's missing.  That file.

So I downloaded SP3 from Microsoft, & double clicked it, watching for the temp directory it creates. Enter that directory & you'll find \i386\ipsec.sy_

Unpack this file back to C:\windows\system32\drivers\ with a little :

expand ipsec.sy_ ipsec.sys

using full path names, the provided directions just have them both in local path

& after a breath taking reboot, the desktop loaded like it should, quick fast & in a hurry, & a test nslookup ebay.com told me (& the customer) that everything is going to be alright.

Hope this helps, because I had a hell of time getting this far

Check it out (at your own risk!)

start -> run -> notepad C:\windows\inf\nettcpip.inf

Look for the following :

;=======================
; TCP/IP Primary Install
;=======================

[MS_TCPIP.PrimaryInstall]
; TCPIP has properties to display
Characteristics = 0xA0 ; NCF_HAS_UI | NCF_NOT_USER_REMOVABLE
AddReg          = Registry.MS_TCPIP.PrimaryInstall, Registry.MS_TCPIP,

Start -> run -> regedit
HKLM -> SYSTEM -> Current Control Set -> Services
In this list lets trash (or rename if you are not so daring ) winsock & winsock2

Then lets reverse the process.

Start -> run -> notepad C:\windows\inf\nettcpip.inf

Look for the following :

;=======================
; TCP/IP Primary Install
;=======================

[MS_TCPIP.PrimaryInstall]
; TCPIP has properties to display
Characteristics = 0xE0 ; NCF_HAS_UI | NCF_NOT_USER_REMOVABLE
AddReg          = Registry.MS_TCPIP.PrimaryInstall, Registry.MS_TCPIP,

Start -> run -> regedit

Here's a head scratcher: So I wanted to watch a DVD yesterday in my computer & it never would play it. To summarize I've tried multiple DVDs (video and data) & a CD from Vista, 7, & XP on the same computer in the same drive and still nothing. The drive is shown as empty each time. At least one one of the DVDs works in my work laptop. In addition the last few times I've tried I've noticed that the disk doesn't appear to have moved because the label is still in the same spot. The drive light does light up and flash for 10-15 seconds before it stops so I know that it's trying. I've checked the connections & they are good. I don't have another DVD drive to check nor do I have another computer to check this drive in.

I'm fairly certain that the drive is bad but I wanted a public opinion before I replace it.

My favorite goal so far (other than the one for the USA, of course) was the diving header scored in the Argentina game:

He put the ball right in the top corner. Amazing. The other thing I like about that vid is the music, Waving Flag by K'naan.

Now for the USA goal:

I could have made that shot. Heck, I could have saved the shot. It wasn't such a great shot, but props to Dempsey for giving it a go.

I tried to find a vid of the other goal that I really liked from today (a brilliant run and strike from a South Korean player), but I couldn't find one. I'll post it if I find one.

So, does anyone have any thoughts about the first two days of play?

I'm trying to show a powerpoint slideshow but when I connect my projector to my computer the screen is cut off on what the projector shows. It shows everything but the right side of the screen. Everything works on the computer. It seems to run off of the side so you can't see the time and some of the little pictures. I tried using those buttons on the computer to change the screen back and forth but it didn't work so then I tried changing the zoom and that didn't help either. Can somebody help me?
