But that’s a rare scenario. Most people I know use registry cleaners as part of their magic cleanup routine, and I see very little upside and a lot of potential downside in this sort of routine use.
I didnt see a thread for comparing or showing off PC builds so i thought is start one to show off my new project:

NZXT Phantom Chassis- Its a full sized chassis with controls for fan speed on the case. It holds 3) 200mm and 3) 125mm fans. 8 drive slots and 4 HDD slots.
[attachment=119]

Motherboard: Asus Sabertooth 990FX- I like this motherboard particularly because of the TUF alloy coating which is a new coating that strongly disperses heat away from the board. Aswell as the RAM slots which can hold up to 32GB.
[attachment=120]

CPU: AMD Phenom II x6 1100T- SIX CORES!!! WHOOO!! lol and for the price its perfect.
[attachment=121]

RAM: Corsair Dominator 4 x 4GB (16GB) DDR3 @1333Mhz- Good brand for an even better price...plus all the reviews on Newegg were 5. I dont kno if my order comes with the dual fans but i plan on getting them.
[attachment=122]

Graphics: Asus GeForce GTX 560 ti- This should be a far sufficient card to play all the latest games. Its a little pricey but its not the $5000 one and still runs at premium
[attachment=123]

HDD: Western Digital 150GB Velociraptor @10000RPM- The Western Digital Velociraptor is the far superior brand and its loading speed speaks for that. I may need to get a bigger size or maybe 2 since ive got the space for it.
(No pic it looks no different than any other HDD)

PSU: Thermaltake TR2 series 600W- Thermaltake is a good brand for a PSU they pride themselves on their cooling abilities and all the reviews on Newegg say it runs great w/o heating issues for prolonged running times. I may need a higher wattage tho:/
(Once again no pic they all look pretty much the same)

Questions and suggestions will be answered and are wanted

My friend came over to my dorm room tonight asking me to help with his computer. He was having a lot of problems both with his computer freezing and with his internet, and he suspected he had a virus. After looking at his computer for a few minutes, I had to agree that he had something tampering with his settings.

First I booted into safe mode and ran a portable SuperAntiSpyware scan. It didn't pick up anything except some tracking cookies and malware from the Symantec quarantine. While in safe mode, I ran CCleaner just for the heck of it. I figured it would at least speed up his computer. While doing that, I noticed that he had about 3/5 of a gig of memory dump files, but he said he had no blue screens.

I booted back into normal operation and started playing with different combinations of settings. I noticed that he had problems connecting via Ethernet, but he had no problems (or few) with his wireless connection. His computer was glitchy and extremely slow on the wired connection, and of all the sites we tried, Google was the only one which wouldn't load after waiting a while. To me that immediately narrowed it down to malware affecting internet settings. I tried disabling and re-enabling the LAN connection and for some reason it worked. I then rebooted to check it, and the problems were back.

Then I found the obvious red flag that the problem was malware: the Google search results all pointed to some affiliate site. I'm assuming the malware's creator was getting paid per hit. Anyways, I went to Google and saw a number of people recommending ComboFix from BleepingComputer as a good way to solve the problem. I downloaded it (his computer had no problem downloading it, strangely) and ran the program. It took what seemed like an hour and a half, restarted twice, but it found a rootkit and apparently it was removed.

I plugged my Ethernet cord back in and Google loaded immediately. I checked the query that I noticed the redirect on earlier, and it worked perfectly fine. The computer seemed to be much more responsive and normal again, so since it was around 1:30AM (about 30 minutes ago at the time of this post), he left for his dorm. I would have tested more thoroughly had it not been so late, but I told him to let me know if he noticed any more problems.

Hello im a new member today so please excuse my ignorance. As the subject says im looking to pretty much upgrade my entire laptop from motherboard, graphics card, cpu, ect. and finishing up with designs and custom leds to the shell. Ive come here because i havnt gotten any answers to my questions by searching the internet. i have some experience as ive built a desktop and repaired many game systems but from my searching ive gathered laptops are much different then any desktop.
My laptop is a Toshiba L305 w/ an Intel Celeron processor running Windows 7
My questions are:
1. Are laptop components such as motherboard, cpu, graphics card, RAM, ect. the same as desktop components? and if not where can i get performance laptop components?
2. Is it possible or even safe to add components like fans or dual gfx cards or more speakers to a laptop? (as i thought a laptop only has room for what it has in it already)
3. For adding LEDs is it safe or possible to tap into power of the laptop as i dont want to overload the components of the laptop?

thats all for now i may be back to this thread to ask more and i give thanx in advance to any replies!

Gah!

I hate this error on laptops, because it can be so many items. The AC adapter, the battery, the dc jack, Vista or Windows 7, or even the bios.

Customer brings in a Dell XPS M1530 because of the previously mentioned error, AC Adapter Plugged In, Not Charging. For those of you that don't have to deal with Dell AC Adapters, I envy you. It is a known, documented fact that Dell attempts to thwart third party hard ware developers by using an IC in their AC Adapter. If the hardware on the laptop doesn't detect the IC, it doesn't charge the battery.

It's also a known issue that both Vista & Windows 7 will put their hand in the proverbial ICPM cookie jar.

At any rate, lets speed forward to my many hours of research & just share the good news. Dell released a BIOS upgrade for their XPS line. In this situation the M1530. The very very very bad bios update is version 12 (or 1530_A12). This update actually causes the error of not recognizing the power adapter. After finding out this information I found the bios upgrade exe on the customers desktop. So I downloaded a roll-back update to version 09 (or 1530_A09) from Dell.

One problem. Simply running the exe gave me an error message that in order to perform the bios update, I must have 10% or more on the battery.

This battery is stone dead. Zero percent. I'm talking pull the plug out & instant good night.

This is where the repair gets real interesting, real fast. There is a tool from HP called The HP usb disk storage format tool. Using this tool we can create a bootable Zip Disk to boot Windows 98.

Wait, what, Windows 98?

Yes, Windows 98.

These files are located here for download.

Once everything is downloaded, run the hp zip, it'll create a directory off C:\ called DriveKey. In there are 2 exe files. You'll run HPUSBFW.exe for the Windows GUI version. Once it's running, plug in your USB drive & it should auto-find it. Select Fat32 for the file system, & then point the dos files option to where you unzip the previously mentioned Windows 98 files. Copy the bios update over the usb drive & it should be the only file listed. Reboot from the USB, & run the bios update with the /forceit option. It will tell you that going backwords is a bad thing, you must hit 'Y' to continue. Then it was done.

Full instructions available here : http://www.bay-wolf.com/usbmemstick.htm

Hopefully this helps you! If not, then it's one of the other options, verify the voltage coming from the AC Adapter brick, or repair the DC Jack.

Hopefully this helps you! If not, then it's one of the other options, verify the voltage coming from the AC Adapter brick, or repair the DC Jack.

A customer brings in a computer for a simple, simple request. He purchased Norton Internet Security 2012, it didn't install correctly, & he would like it removed. After taking the customers information, logging it into the system, & creating a ticket, I connect his machine & fire it up. It immediately throws a BSOD, again in safe mode, & yet again in safe mode command prompt only.

c0000135 The program can't start because %hs is missing from your computer. Try reinstalling the program to fix this problem.

Well that is insulting. How can one be expected to reinstall it, if it isn't even there. Whatever. Hello Google my old friend, I've come to you again.

Every immediate result that I get for this error is AVG. The simple fix, enter the program files directory & rename the AVG directory. Weird. There isn't one. So I phone up the customer & confirm, he never used AVG. Blah.

After 2 days I finally hit paydirt! I pull the customers hard drive from the machine, & attach it via USB to another working Windows machine. To this I remote edit the registry hive SOFTWARE (found in C:\windows\system32\config\software\). Under HKLM -> System -> ControlSet001 -> Control -> Session manager -> SubSystem, edit the data in the Value Name Windows.

By default the value should read :
%SystemRoot%\system32\csrss.exe ObjectDirectory=\Windows SharedSection=1024,20480,768 Windows=On SubSystemType=Windows ServerDll=basesrv,1 ServerDll=consrv:UserServerDllInitialization,3 ServerDll=winsrv:ConServerDllInitialization,2 ServerDll=sxssrv,4 ProfileControl=Off MaxRequestThreads=16

Look for ServerDll=consrv & change it to ServerDll=winsrv

%SystemRoot%\system32\csrss.exe ObjectDirectory=\Windows SharedSection=1024,20480,768 Windows=On SubSystemType=Windows ServerDll=basesrv,1 ServerDll=winsrv:UserServerDllInitialization,3 ServerDll=winsrv:ConServerDllInitialization,2 ServerDll=sxssrv,4 ProfileControl=Off MaxRequestThreads=16

Then check the next entry :

HKLM -> System -> ControlSet002 -> Control -> Session manager -> SubSystem

Make the same change if required.

After doing the above, I rebooted only to find that the machine had 'boot issues'. I inserted my Windows 7 disk, allowed it to detect boot issues upon which is immediately found & corrected. My suspicion is the boot issue was due to the usb/sata converter. At any rate, once that was resolved, I was booting into Windows 7, removing Norton from the machine!
