Just wanted to share some information/thoughts about this device since it can be hard to find sometimes. Very cool device, but poorly planned and marketed ahead of it's time.

Gigabyte i-Ram is a sata 1 ddr based sdd. It was made for 2 years and priced around $150 USD. Both years the models were different. Year 1 the device was a pci card that drew power from pci and transfered data over sata 1. Year 2 it was changed into a non pci device that had an ac adapter and mounted like something along the lines of a dvd drive would. I've never done an iops test or read/write test however best guess based on some translated blog entries is that it recieves about 9000-11000 iops and has a max read/write speed of 130mbs. I managed to purchase one of these a while back however I didn't have a chance to fiddle with it much because I sold my desktop and at the time I had windows 7 installed. This device was designed for XP and some users have said it works on Ubuntu. However for me i tried Windows 7 X86-64 and the device didn't work. It wouldn't allow a partition table to be written. I also tried partedmagic which couldn't use it either. Gigabyte i-ram officially supports a max of 4gb of ram via 4 dimm slots. Some people have tried using 2gb dimms however I've never found anyone posting succesful results. Overall this could be useful for running linux or perhaps a windows page file. However price vs performance makes it non viable since almost any ssd you buy currently for the same price will have 4 times the iops and use atleast a sata 2 connection. However the idea behind this device is very cool.

There are other ramdrive products out there that are more modern however at best they use ddr2 and a sata 2 connection with iops around 100,000 and cost about $400-600 without the ram and only support a max of 64gb making them poor value compared to any modern nand-flash ssd.

Personally I find software generated ramdrives more interesting.

Quote:Today marks the start of the 1-year countdown of when we stop supporting Windows XP. Many of you saw the post this morning on the Windows For Your Businessblog. Over the past few months I have gotten a lot of questions on what that means exactly. Here are some answers to help explain what end of support is and what you need to do to move to a modern OS like Windows 7 or Windows 8.

Microsoft will end Extended Support on April 8, 2014. Why?

In 2002, Microsoft introduced its Support Lifecycle policy based on customer feedback to have more transparency and predictability of support for Microsoft products. Per this policy, Microsoft Business and Developer products – including Windows and Office products – receive a minimum of 10 years of support (five years Mainstream Support and five years Extended Support), at the supported service pack level. Windows XP SP3 and Office 2003 will go out of support on April 8, 2014. If your organization has not started the migration to a modern desktop, you are late. Based on historical customer deployment data, the average enterprise deployment can take 18 to 32 months from business case through full deployment. To ensure you remain on supported versions of Windows and Office, you should begin your planning and application testing immediately to ensure you deploy before end of support.

IMO most users should already be running Vista or 7. I won't comment on 8 except that sat that it is more secure than XP.

Quote:The countdown clock has been ticking on Windows XP for a couple of years now, but the end is coming into view. There are only 500 days to go before Microsoft ends its extended support, and that means no more patches and no more security fixes. Given that XP is not exactly famous for its security, this represents a significant risk.

However, a security breach might not be the worst of it. Journalists will be only too keen to write up the first few stories about companies whose defences are penetrated because they are still using an obsolete operating system, so the damage to their brand and reputation could be unusually large. And rather than the polite sadness that sometimes colours such stories (unlucky; could happen to anyone), victims can expect a well-deserved splattering of glee (told you so!).
